Dr. Susan Cutler discussing xerostomia and the benefits of NeutraSal

Frequently asked questions

What are the indications for NeutraSal?

NeutraSal is indicated for:

  • Dryness of the mouth (hyposalivation, xerostomia)
  • Dryness of the oral mucosa due to drugs such as antihistamines or atropine or other anticholinergic agents that suppress salivary secretion
  • Use as part of an oral hygiene program for patients with dry mouth
  • Providing intensive hygiene of the oral cavity
  • Use as an adjunct to standard oral care in relieving the discomfort associated with oral mucositis that may be caused by radiation or high-dose chemotherapy
  • Relief of dryness of the oral mucosa in these conditions is associated with amelioration of pain

NeutraSal may be used for relief of dryness of the oral mucosa when hyposalivation results from the following:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy near the salivary glands
  • Infection or dysfunction of the salivary glands
  • Obstruction of the salivary ducts
  • Fever
  • Emotional factors such as fear or anxiety
  • Sjögren's syndrome

What are the ingredients in NeutraSal?

(Active) Dibasic Sodium Phosphate, Monobasic Sodium Phosphate, Calcium Glycerophosphate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate (Inactive) Silicon dioxide

Does NeutraSal have any potential allergens, like wheat or nuts?

NeutraSal has no wheat, nuts, eggs, gluten, yeast, milk, soy, shellfish, or preservative ingredients.

What is the safety profile of NeutraSal?

  • Not intended to prevent xerostomia or oral mucositis.
  • Patients should avoid eating or drinking for at least 15 minutes after use
  • Solution should not be swallowed but be spit out.
  • Not intended for systemic use to treat any diseases of the throat or upper gastrointestinal tract
  • Not intended for use as an antacid
  • No adverse events anticipated if swallowed accidentally
  • Contains sodium; Patients restricted to a low-sodium diet should consult their physician before use

What are the recommended dosages of NeutraSal?

Is it acceptable to mix NeutraSal in more than 1 ounce (30 mL) of water, for example, a full glass of drinking water (6-8 oz)?

NeutraSal must be diluted in 1 ounce of water to achieve the full clinical benefit.

How does NeutraSal taste?

NeutraSal has a slightly salty taste; however, it is well tolerated by patients.

Is there a benefit to NeutraSal delivery as a powder to be mixed at the time of use vs a liquid delivery system?

The present formulation can provide higher concentrations of calcium and phosphate, a difference made possible by providing a stable powder to be mixed with water, in contrast to commercially available liquid products. The delivery through a powder allows for the creation of an oral rinse that achieves statistically significantly higher levels of calcium and phosphate than can otherwise be achieved when delivered in liquid containing calcium and phosphate.1 NeutraSal is a supersaturated solution of calcium phosphate.

Why does NeutraSal have to be used within 15 seconds after mixing? Can it be pre-mixed in the morning and used later in the day?

NeutraSal should be used within 15 seconds after mixing to achieve the full clinical benefit. After this time period, the supersaturation benefit of the calcium phosphate ions will decrease. Calcium phosphate dissolves in water to form a supersaturated solution, but the supersaturated solution is not stable and calcium phosphate could precipitate out if the supersaturated solution sits for a long time. Multiple factors, such as changing temperature, increasing pressure, etc, could cause precipitation from a supersaturated solution.

How does NeutraSal improve the oral environment?

It is an advanced electrolyte solution that mimics natural saliva and contains electrolytes such as calcium, phosphate, sodium, bicarbonate, and chloride, which are necessary for a healthy, functioning mouth. NeutraSal is designed to replace the normal ionic and pH balance in the mouth.

When NeutraSal is taken, ions in the the mouth such as calcium and phosphate play crucial roles in the protection process and aid in mineralization. Bicarbonate reduces the acidity (raises pH) of oral fluids.

Does NeutraSal cure xerostomia and oral mucositis?

No, NeutraSal mimics natural saliva and helps alleviate symptoms of xerostomia and oral mucositis while helping to protect oral mucosal tissues. Please see your dentist or healthcare professional for more information.

Is NeutraSal an anticavity rinse?

NeutraSal is not indicated as an anticavity rinse. It is indicated for the treatment of xerostomia and oral mucositis. However, by mimicking saliva, the calcium and phosphate help mineralize enamel and the bicarbonate raises the pH of the oral cavity.
